C-SPAN Series Profiles Past Presidential Candidates

“The Contenders,” a 14-week series beginning tonight on C-SPAN, will take a look at several presidential candidates who made history, despite never making it to the Oval Office. The series will begin with 1844 Whig Party candidate Henry Clay and end with Ross Perot, who ran in both 1992 and 1996.

“The idea is to offer an alternative school of political history,” said Richard Norton Smith, a historian-consultant to C-SPAN. “More than a few who were deemed losers in their time turned out to be winners in the longer run.”

C‑SPAN, created by the cable television industry to provide public access to the political process, is generally available to Suddenlink customers who have what is commonly known as Expanded Basic TV service.
