USA Unites Awards Nominations Due

The deadline to submit entries for this year’s USA Unites Awards is tomorrow, April 17, at 10:59 p.m. CT. Nominations can be submitted online to recognize extraordinary individuals dedicated to improving lives and strengthening communities.

Ten winners will each receive a $5,000 grant to help start or build on their community projects, which will also be featured on-air and online. For the first time, this year’s program will include a youth category to recognize young people inspiring change.

To nominate yourself or someone you know, visit http://www.charactersunite.com/. The entry requires a maximum 500-word essay on how the nominee meets the criteria of character, impact and influence.

USA Network, Suddenlink Honor Abilene Leader

Abilene, Texas community advocate and civic leader Petty Hunter was recognized at a hometown award ceremony last Friday as one of 10 national recipients of USA Network’s Characters Unite Awards in 2013. In partnership with Suddenlink, USA Network presented the award and a check for $5,000 to support Hunter’s community projects.

Hunter was recognized for displaying outstanding leadership in spearheading positive social change in the areas of education, civic duty, economic and community development and elder care.

Abilene Man Receives Characters Unite Award

USA Network and Suddenlink will honor Petty Hunter, Abilene, Texas, as a recipient of USA Network’s Characters Unite Award. The award recognizes those who have made extraordinary efforts in combating prejudice and discrimination while increasing tolerance and acceptance in their communities. Petty was among 10 winners selected from hundreds of nominees.

Petty serves as president of the local NAACP chapter, executive director of Neighborhoods in Progress, treasurer of Interested Citizens of Abilene North, board member of the Big Country Sports Hall of Fame, and in several other volunteer committee positions. He will receive a $5,000 grant for his work from Suddenlink and USA Network, which he said he will give to I-CAN’s Curtis House renovation project.

Characters Unite Nominations Due March 15

 

The nomination period for USA Network’s Characters Unite Awards runs through March 15. Suddenlink is again partnering with USA Network for the third annual awards, which are part of the network’s ongoing public affairs campaign to address social injustices and bridge cultural divides. The program recognizes extraordinary individuals who have made significant and lasting efforts to champion civil and human rights in their communities.

Entries, including a maximum 500-word essay on how the nominee meets the criteria of character, impact and influence, can be submitted online.

Characters Unite Award Winners Announced

Today, USA Network and Suddenlink honored Chantel Miller, Greenville, N.C., as a recipient of USA Network’s Characters Unite Award. The award recognizes those who have made extraordinary efforts in combating prejudice and discrimination while increasing tolerance and acceptance in their communities. She was among 10 winners selected from hundreds of nominees.

A junior majoring in Anthropology at East Carolina University in Greenville, Chantel created a photography documentary project to raise awareness of issues of intolerance and to share people’s stories in a creative way. Chantel hopes to raise money with her photo projects to help her friends and others facing bigotry pay for their college educations. She received a $5,000 grant for her work from Suddenlink and USA Network.

February is ‘Characters Unite’ Month on USA

USA has launched its second annual “Characters Unite” campaign to put a spotlight on bullying, racism, religious intolerance and other forms of discrimination.   More than 20 nonprofit organizations, as well as many star athletes and entertainers, have partnered with USA for a month of awareness-building programming and initiatives, including the Characters Unite Storytelling Tour and the Characters Unite Awards.
