Home PC Helps Find New Star

A screen saver on an Ames, Iowa, couple’s home computer is being credited with helping find a new star. Astronomers informed Chris and Helen Colvin of the discovery after it was confirmed by another user’s computer in Germany The Colvins participate in a project called Einstein@Home, an experimental program that uses a computer’s idle time to search for gravitational waves from spinning neutron stars, or pulsars. This is the first deep-space discovery by the program. Wired magazine has details.
